Turning 80 next year, my life as a Singaporean Muslim woman, born in 1947, 2 years after the WWII that killed 65 million people it is a learning journey – believing that leader matters most.
The vision of multiracial Singapore during the painful birth of our nation – rejected by the Malay/Muslim world of Malaysia in 1965…. Embroiled with dangerous emotions – anger, stress, hate, apathy…. Necessitated me to recapture that learning journey bruised by destruction and not peace after performing the haj in 2010 – in never a victim. Is there emotional empowerment to take us further?
Working in the Singapore broadcasting station (1970-2005) issues of rising divorces, families breaking apart and children dumbed into drug abuses – with turbulent relationships were issues of our early independence.
What impact – LKY’s vision of multiracialism supported by Goh Chock Tong who successful unified the diverse Chinese from speaking in dialects – into Mandarin – one language. While Malay/Muslim – with meritocracy – with MUIS and Malay broadcasting station to go further with our 3rd PM Lee Hsien Loong bringing us closer together with technology to include building a new city – the Marina Bay – rising from the sea.
Going through the past – I like to say ‘a big thankyou to them all….
… tears filled my eyes watching our current PM Lawrence Wong speaking of a plan to build a spore Islamic college by 2028 …. Simply …. unbelievable ….
Singapore Muslims, a minority – were we deaf, dumb and blind as said by the Quran – chapter 2/al Baqarah? It means a female cow.
All the 3 Abrahamic religions since the dark age of illiteracy, abused, led first by moses in the dark age of illiteracy with Jesus and Christianity beginning the 1st ad are said by the Quran are ‘believers of the truth’… simply Muslims in Arabic!

In – never a victim … of greed or materialism as exemplified by the past colonial period – hate and jealousy turned many to use skin colour, and cultural differences … poisoning many into racial riots.
Moving forward…. As no two (2) thumbprints are alike …without disciplining early in life with love and care – we might act — instinctively – as animal – a life without disciplines …. Fight, flight, kill or be killed … leading to disaster ……
turning problems into solutions — taught by the Quran – i must agree that ’learning matters most.
To be future ready is the way to go.

Zainab had a last meeting with founding father LKY in 1997, by then, a senior minister, after returning home from Indonesia, covering students rioting as the country was caught in a financial crisis. In turmoil, people young and old were fighting and killing each other, despite being a majority Muslims country, practising a culture most like us. Coming home, she made an appointment with the late LKY asking him, “could that happen in multiracial Singapore?” the interview was then broadcast on MediaCorp and RSI, its regional station.
Mr lee’s answer: ‘no, our young are better educated now than ever’.
